Wyoming is home to a successful and dynamic K-12 educational system, as well as a comprehensive state university and community college network.
Wyoming’s K-12 public schools are predominantly rural and small, yet inventive and modern. According to the Nation’s Report Card, over the past 10 years Wyoming’s 4th and 8th graders have consistently received higher than average scores in mathematics, reading and science. Wyoming is a national leader in K-12 technology access and utilization due to innovative projects such as WYO.BEST, which provides technology training and curricula to educators.
The University of Wyoming is Wyoming’s state university. Located in Laramie, this doctoral university offers over 180 programs of study, including 80 undergraduate majors. The university also encompasses several distinct research institutes, centers and laboratories, such as the Institute for Energy Research and the Wyoming Geographic Information Science Center. The University of Wyoming participates in the WWAMI Program, a rural medical education program, which allows students to attend medical school regionally.
The Wyoming Community College Commission regulates Wyoming’s seven public community colleges, including Casper College and Sheridan College. These colleges offer accessible education to a rural populace. Courses and programs are specifically designed to prepare students for either the workplace or further education.
There is only one private secular educational institution in Wyoming. Preston University, in Cheyenne, is a small university, which offers degrees ranging from Associate to Doctor of Philosophy in many areas, in addition to distance learning programs.
